Project Information: The high slope pitched roof of this building was constructed in three phases, consisting of the original 1907 building and two additions built in 1924 and 1939. The roofing material is a zinc coated steel shingle system with liquid applied weather coating. The roof deck is wood sheathing. A condition assessment report was prepared by outside consulting engineering firm in May of 2005. Their full report is available for reference, and their observations are summarized below. Also, UNC Design and Construction Guidelines for Employee Fall Protection are provided for easy reference. Steep Slope Roof : The shingles are in poor condition. There are extensive areas of rust over the roof surface. The fluid applied weather coating is cracking, peeling, and flaking. The flashings have loose and missing fasteners. Low-Sloped Roofs: The low slope roof over the main entrance has a black coating that has degraded with moderate to heavy cracking. Surface corrosion was observed. A low sloped roof is located at the southwest corner of the building. It has a flat seam metal roof with an elastomeric coating. The coating was applied as a repair. There are no active leaks that have been reported. Hazardous Material Abatement:The UNC-CH Department of Health and Safety tested the shingle coating for lead and the test results were positive. The roof shingle coating was also tested for asbestos and the test results were positive. Those test results and recommendations are supplied with this document.
